Restoration Ecology Internships
The Prairie Enthusiasts
Looking for field experience in natural area restoration and management? Four paid internships in restoration ecology are available through The Prairie Enthusiasts (Empire-Sauk Chapter). Work will be carried out at several outstanding prairie and savanna sites in southern Wisconsin. This is an opportunity to learn plant and animal identification, ecosystem ecology, habitat needs of rare and declining species, and the tools, methods, and philosophies of restoration ecology from professional ecologists and experienced practitioners. You will also learn about the conservation significance and goals of various preserves.

These are full-time positions for 12 weeks from Tuesday, June 1, through Friday, August 20, 2021.

Invasives removal - summer job

If you're a student looking for summer work and interested in restoration ecology, we have work for you! Our project for this summer is removal of invasive honeysuckle. The job will include cutting brush, digging/pulling roots, transporting debris to a burn location and burning (weather permitting). We will provide all tools and gloves. The job will consist of two weeks work in June, two in July and possibly a week in August. These are paid jobs. You must be able to provide your own transportation to the job site in western Green County.
Native Landscape Technician

Restoration Landscape Technician will be expected to participate in maintenance, landscape construction, and stewardship tasks. Maintenance tasks may include services, such as pruning, weeding and planting. New installations will include sod removal, planting native perennials, shrubs, trees, and installing mulch. Stewardship services include invasive species removal by mechanical and chemical methods, native and invasive seed collection and wildlife surveys. On the job training will be provided as needed.

Ecosystem Restoration Technician

This is a seasonal Ecosystem Restoration Technician position working with our Ecosystem Restoration group carrying out tasks related to prairie, wetland, and other natural community restoration and management. This is a full-time (40-hour work week), limited-term position.

Ecological Restoration: Specific job tasks include application of various herbicides, mowing, installation of native seeds and plants, prescribed burning, and brush/tree removal. Equipment operations may include the use of chainsaws, backpack herbicide sprayers, ATVs, and tractors / skid loaders with various attachments.

Environmental Data Collection & Reporting: Assist project managers, staff scientists, and senior scientists with the collection of field and written/tabular data for various tasks. Maintain records for restoration activities and safety programs and assist with report preparation on an as-needed basis.

Native Plant and Pollinator Program Crew Member

A Critical Hire is needed to work this summer (approximately 23 May to 17 July 2021, with possible flexibility in dates) on the Native Plant and Pollinator Program (NP3) Crew, a great job opportunity for anyone enthusiastic about native plants, pollinators, habitat restorations, or wildlife in general, and it is perfect for someone wanting to work in a variety of terrestrial habitats in northeastern Wisconsin. Join a Crew that's been around since 2012 creating positive change for native plants and all who depend on them!

Contact Nick Gremban (nicholas.gremban@usda.gov) for details on this summer's duties and to apply, but in the past duties included spot-herbicide treatments to protect and restore high-quality pollinator habitats, native plant propagation from seeds the Crew collects, maintenance of native plant gardens at Forest Service facilities, and assisting with a variety of wildlife, plant, and fisheries projects according to District needs (several bee and butterfly surveys, yearly bat acoustic surveys, wood turtle nest site maintenance, non-native invasive plant control, trout stream improvement, plus occasional conservation education events, avian point counts, frog and toad surveys, wolf howl surveys, and more depending on what's happening each summer).
