3-year Postdoc at UVA on Synchrony of Kelp Forest Ecosystems
University of Virginia
The Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks a postdoctoral research associate to study the ecology and spatial synchrony of kelp forests in coastal California. As part of an NSF-funded research project, the postdoctoral research associate will investigate the patterns and causes of synchrony (the tendency for populations in different locations to fluctuate similarly over time) in kelp populations and associated reef communities, and the consequences for coastal ecosystem structure and function. The position will focus on analyzing multiple long-term, large-scale ecological and oceanographic datasets related to California giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) forests and sandy beach ecosystems, including those from biodiversity monitoring programs and remote sensing products.

The postdoctoral research associate will be based in Charlottesville, Virginia, where they will join a dynamic research group led by professor Max Castorani (https://castorani.evsc.virginia.edu/). They will also work closely with a collaborative team of principal investigators, postdocs, and students at the University of Kansas and University of California at Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. The position has considerable technical support for data management. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the position may begin with a remote work arrangement.

Kelp Project Director
The Nature Conservancy
The California Chapter of The Nature Conservancy is searching for a Kelp Project Director to work with partners along the North Coast of California lead projects for conserving and restoring the kelp forests that our oceans and communities depend on. The goal of TNC’s Kelp Conservation Program is to accelerate the protection and restoration of these ecosystems across California by leveraging technology and a suite of innovative tools and approaches so that the ecosystems and communities that depend on kelp may continue to thrive in their presence. Our team catalyzes needed change by testing new, collaborative ways to protect and restore kelp forests – demonstrating what innovative ocean management can look like—not only in California, but around the world. The Project Director will lead and manage kelp conservation projects and provide support to the Kelp Strategy Lead, Norah Eddy, helping to advance key objectives of the strategy through our project-based work.

PhD training program in Sustainable Oceans
University of California, Davis
UC Davis is accepting applications to a graduate Research Traineeship (NRT) program “Sustainable Oceans: From Policy to Science to Decisions”, supported by a $3M award from the National Science Foundation. Our Sustainable Oceans NRT trains the next generation of PhD marine scientists under a new paradigm that puts the policy focus on the front-end of the research and training enterprise as a means of building more effective links between the science and decisions on sustainable use of living marine resources. The basis of the interdisciplinary paradigm is combining traditional graduate training in core disciplines and interdisciplinary courses on marine science and policy with immersion into the policy process and politics surrounding ecosystem-based fishery management.

Starting in 2018, over 5 years, we anticipate training 60 PhD students, including 30 funded trainees, from the fields of ecology, conservation biology, economics, environmental policy, geology, physiology, biogeochemistry, and oceanography.

If you would like to learn more about this program, please visit https://sustainableoceans.ucdavis.edu

For general questions, please contact our Program Coordinator, Pernille Sporon Boving (boving@ucdavis.edu)
