The #RealCollege Convening

Without sufficient food and a safe place to sleep, college students across the nation are struggling to learn. #RealCollege is the movement to do something about it. Join students, practitioners, policymakers, researchers, and activists at the annual #RealCollege convening to develop strategies and take action to secure students' basic needs.

This no-frills event focuses on viable solutions. Come ready to partner with colleagues in order to:

  • Create affordable housing, including for community college students
  • Prevent food insecurity with efforts that go beyond the campus food pantry
  • Shape state and federal policies to improve food and housing resources available to students
  • Address the needs of students returning to college and other older learners
  • Support student-parents, former foster youth, re-entry populations, and undocumented students
Featuring interactive workshops, multimedia learning opportunities, and plenty of time to network with colleagues, #RealCollege is the place to create real change.

Background on the Movement
#RealCollege is a national movement created by the Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice. Focused on the struggles, triumphs, and realities of what it means to be in college today, #RealCollege seeks to change the landscape of higher education so that all students can afford and complete their studies.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who should attend #RealCollege?

We have very limited space for this convening and ask that you keep this in mind as you think about traveling with a team from your college. We recommend that you bring no more than 5 people. Ideally this team would include a leader (a president or vice president), somone from student services (financial aid or student affairs), someone doing the work for your organization (food pantry manager), a leader with financial ties (a board member), and a student with lived experience. You will receive a reduced rate if you purchase tickets as a group of 5. We cannot permit groups of more than 5 from a single college.

What should I bring?

-Note-taking tools
-Water bottle to refill (water bottles will also be available for purchase)
-Colleagues who will collaborate with you to implement real change (no more than 5 people from a single college)
-Your lived experience

What sort of accessibility options will there be?
We are committed to making this event as accessible as possible. If you have specific requests around accessibility, please let us know during the registration process.

Can I come to Texas as a California state employee?
We recognize and appreciate the limitations on travel to Texas for California state employees. The decision to hold the event in Texas was a difficult one and ultimately we decided to honor the challenges facing students and colleges in that state, and draw attention to key issues of immigration and human rights by doing so. To help Californians participate in #RealCollege, here are some tips:
-We are offering a live stream. Purchase a pass to the live stream, get your group of colleagues together and have a watch party!
-There will be a special #RealCollegeCalifornia conference in December 2019. Stay tuned for more information.
-Despite the overall travel ban, you may be able to attend. The conference is on a weekend and thus not during work time. In addition, UC, CSU, and CCC systems all allow travel to Texas using non-state funds, and we offer travel scholarships. Apply for a travel scholarship.

Specifics
-UC Policy
-Cal State Policy
-CCC Policy – The decision is made by the local disctrict, however official CCCCO policy is that travel using non-state funds is allowed at the discretion of the district.
