Feedback from pre and post event survey is important to your event success and improvement, which is why you need to know how to collect it.

Pre-event surveys can help your prepare for an upcoming event, while post-event survey questions help you improve your future events. Live polling is a fun way to get feedback in real time and keep your attendees engaged and connected. However, creating live poll and conference survey questions from scratch can take hours when you’re already busy with a long to-do list. That’s why we’ve created this step-by-step question guide.

Event Survey Questions for the Whole Event Process

So what kind of questions should you include in your surveys? It all depends on when you’re sending them out, what you want to achieve, and who you want to ask. (We’ll provide a downloadable template below but if you want more, you can find them on our mobile survey platform.)

1. Event specific survey: If you want to collect more in-depth feedback, an event type specific survey can help. • How was your experience with the suggested hotel accommodations?
  • How can we improve the check-in process?
  • Should we include longer or more breaks in between sessions?
  • Name your top three speakers you would like to see next year.
  • How could we improve the event?

3. Participant specific survey: You can also send out pre and post event survey questions to specific groups of event participants, say your speakers, exhibitors or volunteers. These event survey questions would be different to those you send out to your attendees.  Examples of participant specific event survey questions include:

  • Was the location of your booth suitable for generating traffic?
  • How satisfied were you with the interest of the attendees with your virtual exhibitor booth?
  • Tell us about any success stories or clients you’ve obtained through exhibiting at the conference

  • How satisfied were you with the interaction of the attendees with your session(s)?
  • How helpful was the staff for the event?

  • What types of sponsorships would you want us to offer at future events?
  • Was it easy to update your company information?

4. Pre-event survey: Wouldn’t it be great to get a pulse on what’s exciting attendees most before your event? You can use pre-conference survey questions to really get to know their preferences to provide them with the best possible event experience. This survey can pop up when a person registers for your event.

Pre-event survey questions might look like this:

  • What kind of SWAG do you prefer? (pens, paper for notes, tote bags?)
  • What are your food preferences? Food allergies? Intolerances?
  • What can we do to make your conference experience the best ever?
  • What tools or information do you need to enjoy the event?
  • What kind of social activities would you like to see organized during this event?
  • Which topics would you like the conference to cover?

Getting More Responses to Your Surveys

We suggest that you encourage attendees to complete your surveys before leaving the venue. In our experience, the last lunch or coffee break is the best time to remind them about survey completion.

By making sure your surveys can be filled out on mobile, or even through your event app, you increase the likelihood that attendees will respond while on the go at your event. Some event apps even use in-app notifications to remind attendees to fill out surveys, which helps boost response rates even higher.

Live Poll Questions for Real-time Feedback and Attendee Engagement

From collecting quantitative feedback to getting to know your attendees, live polls are a great way to increase attendee engagement at your event. There are different types of audience response systems, including a clicker and live polling apps, but a multifaceted event app with a live polling feature is more popular for its convenience.

Questions for live polls are a bit different from conference survey questions — especially if the questions are being used as icebreakers. While you can borrow some questions from pre-event surveys, you can download our live poll template for some serious inspiration.

1) Inform decision-making before or during events: Live poll questions can help you make decisions in real time. You can use them to get an accurate headcount for activities that will keep your attendees engaged, making organization much easier.

Live polling can be the perfect place to ask questions like:

  • How many of you are planning to stay for lunch or go out with new friends?
  • We ran out of notepads, how many people didn’t get one and would like one?
  • What time are you leaving for the airport?

2) Increase attendee engagement: With live poll questions on an event app, you and your speakers can project the questions and answers on a presentation screen for all to see. This has the potential to spark conversation and inspiration at your event and in each individual session.

By participating in the polls and seeing the dynamic results, attendees feel more involved in the event experience. Event Manager Blog also listed live polling as one of the top engagement ideas for speakers. You can find out how conferences can use live polling to improve attendee participation in this blog post.

Live polling questions of this type can include:

  • How many of you have been influenced by Dr. Gunther’s work?
  • How many of you have experience using a product like the one I’m presenting?
  • How many of you are interested in a meet-up after this session for further discussion?
  • What city should we have our next conference in?
  • Which startup team should be awarded the People’s Choice Award?

3) Get to know attendees: Live poll questions can also help you get to know your attendees and your attendees get to know one another.

Questions can include:

  • Where is your country of origin?
  • How many times have you attended this conference?
  • What topics (or exhibitors) interest you the most?
  • Would anyone who’s arriving on Sunday be interested in hanging out with other early arrivals?
